A Promise of Ice and Spite- S.W. Clarke Review🗡️

Thank you to the S.W. Clarke for trusting me as an ARC reader! This review reflects my honest thoughts.

There are books you enjoy, and then there are books that completely take over your brain while you’re reading them. A Promise of Ice and Spite by S.W. Clarke firmly falls into the second category for me. This is the second and final installment in the Crown of Feyreign duet, and it delivers exactly what a finale should: higher stakes, bigger twists, emotional payoff, and a battle sequence that deserves its own standing ovation.

And yes, this is an easy 5⭐ read for me, honestly for the battle scenes alone.

The magic of the world feels alive. One small detail that really stuck with me was how the author describes the feeling of magic changing depending on the location. It’s a subtle piece of continued worldbuilding, but it adds so much depth. The shift in magical atmosphere between regions isn’t just mentioned in passing. It’s described as drastic and tangible, like stepping into an entirely different climate.

Moments like this are what elevate fantasy from “good” to immersive. You don’t just read about the world — you feel like you’re moving through it.

The plot twists actually work. Let’s talk about the chaos (the good kind).

The plot twists in this book are insane in the best way possible. This story had me second guessing myself constantly. Every time I thought I had the puzzle figured out, another piece dropped that made me question everything I thought I knew.

What really impressed me is how the twists are handled. The author sprinkles clues throughout the story, little breadcrumbs that make you feel confident you’re putting the pieces together. Then the truth is revealed and suddenly you’re sitting there like:

“OH MY GOD. How did I not see that??”

Before this series, I used to hate when authors pulled the “surprise twist” card repeatedly. It often felt messy or disorganized. But S.W. Clarke absolutely nails it. Every twist feels intentional, clever, and earned. The reveals don’t feel random, they feel like the inevitable answer you somehow missed.

That kind of storytelling takes serious creativity and control.

Now let’s get to the part that sealed the 5-star rating for me.

The final battle is immaculate.

One of the things I love most about A Court of Thorns and Roses is the way battles are written. The pacing, the emotion, the cinematic scale. And this finale stands right alongside that level of intensity.

The climax hits hard.

The tension builds perfectly.

The betrayals you expect still manage to shock you.

You go into the final conflict knowing things are going to explode… and yet the story still finds ways to surprise you. That balance is incredibly difficult to pull off, but this book does it beautifully.

Twists on top of twists.

Just when you think the story has revealed everything, BAM. Another twist.

Some reveals are predictable in a satisfying way, the kind that make you nod and go, “Okay yes, that makes sense.” But right when you feel comfortable again, the story pulls the rug out from under you with something you didn’t see coming.

It creates this constant tension where you never fully relax, because the story has trained you not to trust your assumptions. And honestly? I loved every second of it.

It feels like a truly unique reading experience. The kind that keeps your brain buzzing long after you close the book.

Final Thoughts:

A Promise of Ice and Spite delivers everything I want in a fantasy finale:

🗡️Continued expansive worldbuilding

🗡️Creative and relentless twists

🗡️Emotional stakes

🗡️And a breathtaking, unforgettable final battle

This duet ends on a powerful high note, and I walked away feeling completely satisfied by the journey.

If you love twist heavy fantasy with cinematic battles and high emotional stakes, this is absolutely one to add to your TBR.

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5) – honestly earned for the battle scenes alone, but the twists and storytelling make it unforgettable.
